The Mecklenburg County District Attorney s office has had to reprioritize cases it prosecutes because of a backlog of cases only made worse by the pandemic.
Pandemic restrictions have slowed down the amount of cases being heard in courtrooms across the country. Because of that, Mecklenburg County’s district attorney says he refocused his office’s priorities when it comes to which cases to prosecute.
More resources have been directed to prosecuting homicide cases, and low-level drug offenses have become less of a priority. But according to a recent report, police are still arresting people for these drug charges even if they will not face prosecution.

The new charges against Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 president claim Catanzara filed a false police report claiming former top cop Eddie Johnson was a trespasser on state land when he joined protestors blocking Dan Ryan Expressway lanes in July 2018. Catanzara also was accused of filing a false police report against a supervisor, who once was his boss, for obstructing justice in November 2018.
Fascistic Proud Boy leader Enrique Tarrio revealed to be “prolific” FBI informant
An investigation by Reuters has revealed that 36-year-old Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the far-right vigilante group, the Proud Boys, was a “prolific” confidential informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local Florida police following a 2012 arrest for fraud related to relabeling and selling stolen diabetes test kits.
According to a transcript of a 2014 federal court proceeding obtained by Reuters, which had statements from a former prosecutor, an FBI agent and Tarrio’s own lawyer, Tarrio worked undercover for federal authorities and local police helping to prosecute 13 people in cases involving drugs, gambling and human smuggling.
