Durban port in for a historical facelift Mar 04, 2021 04:03:2021 A major economic feature and tourist attraction in Durban, the Durban port, could be in line for a historical facelift, which may see the naval base and the petrochemical operations relocated. The port’s general manager, Moshe Motlohi, in an exclusive interview with The Mercury, today unveiled a draft “master plan” that promises to restore the port to its glory days when it was the number one marine facility in Africa. Motlohi says Transnet was in a consultation process to gain approval for the implementation of the plan, which aims to fast-track the port’s growth from the current 2.9 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers to 11.3 million TEUs annual container handling capacity.

Finance minister nixes defence committee budget recommendations

Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has shot down calls by the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans (PCDMV) for more funding for border security, the Special Defence Account and the mid-life upgrade of SA Navy vessels. In the 2021 Budget Review published on 24 February, the minister responded to the PCDMV Budgetary Review and Recommendations Report (BRRR). The PCDMV had recommended the Minister of Finance consider an additional ring-fenced allocation to gradually increase the number of sub-units from 15 to at least 22 sub-units for border safeguarding by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). “This increase will assist the SANDF in countering cross-border crime and adhering to its legislated function to effect national border control.”

Midlife upgrades for SAN platforms on hold pending funding – Armscor

In its latest annual report, the State-owned defence and security acquisition agency has it the project to upgrade the four Valour Class frigates “is in the concept phase that commenced in February 2016”. No dates are given as regards upgrades for the three Heroine Class Type 209 submarines for which feasibility studies are complete with a recommended approach defined. This has been approved by SAN.
