Austin wants stable relationship with China | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

Austin wants stable relationship with China US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has said he wants his country to have more transparency and better communication with China. He said he has made numerous attempts to set up face-to-face meetings with top Chinese officials. Austin is on a tour of Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. He is discussing regional security with his counterparts in those countries. Austin said the US will not flinch when its interests are threatened, yet it does not seek confrontation. He added he is committed to pursuing a constructive and stable relationship with China. In talks with Singapore Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen, Austin touched on some areas of tension with China.

Austin: US doesn t want conflict with China but won t flinch when our interests are threatened

endIndex: (CNN) US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said Tuesday that China s claims and actions in the Indo-Pacific threaten the sovereignty of nations around the region while Washington is committed to building partnerships that guarantee the vital interest of all nations. Beijing s claim to the vast majority of the South China Sea has no basis in international law. That assertion treads on the sovereignty of states in the region, Austin said in a speech to the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Singapore. China claims almost all of the 1.3-million-square-mile South China Sea as its sovereign territory, despite much of those claims running against international law.

Austin slams China, vows deeper role in Asia

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sought to reassure the Asia-Pacific that the U.S. was committed to engagement in the region, while vowing to challenge what he called China’s aggression. “We will not flinch when our interests are threatened,” Austin said in a speech Tuesday in Singapore. “Yet we do not seek confrontation.” Austin’s remarks focused on U.S. ties with Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including the millions of vaccines that Washington has donated to the region. But he also stressed that the U.S. and its partners faced a common challenge in China. The former U.S. Army general told the event hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies that Washington would work “with partners to deter coercion and aggression across the spectrum of conflict,” including Chinese maritime claims in regional waters and assertive military actions.
