Councillors agreed on Feb. 16 to send a letter of support to Xinyi Glass Canada, encouraging the company to “strongly consider” locating the new plant within St. Clair.

Earlier that same day, the company said it was “indefinitely suspending” plans to build the plant in Stratford, blaming that city’s council for dragging its feet in the face of criticism from opponents of the deal.

The Chinese glass company that planned a $400-million factory in Stratford has decided to “indefinitely suspend” the proposal, blaming the city for dragging its feet.
“In light of the continued deferral of approval by Stratford city council, Xinyi Canada has decided to suspend the project indefinitely to avoid further financial loss and unfounded attacks on its reputation,” said a statement released Tuesday by Xinyi Canada Glass.

“Xinyi Canada appreciates the support received for the project by many local residents and the business community, and is grateful to the federal and Ontario governments for their support of the project. . . .
