Stratford asking Ontario to revoke ministerial zoning order

Stratford asking Ontario to revoke ministerial zoning order SHARE ON: Stratford City Council is asking Ontario to remove a ministerial zoning order. Council voted 9-2 during their meeting Monday afternoon to request the province revoke the MZO that would have allowed Xinyi Glass Canada to build a glass plant in the city’s south end. Xinyi announced in February that it was suspending its proposal due to many in the community speaking out against it and the project’s slow progress. Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson says council is listening to the voices of residents in the city. “It is important that council listen to those, and of course discern, and make decisions that represent the best interests of the long term for the community.”

Canadian Premium Sand Plans Float Glass Facility in Manitoba

March 2, 2021 Officials from Canadian Premium Sand Inc., or CPS, announced a shift in the company’s business strategy to focus on developing its Wanipigow, Manitoba, silica sand deposit into a sustainable float glass manufacturing and coating facility. Why Stratford group opposed glass plant development

Council’s “letter of support” encouraged the corporation to “strongly consider” locating the plant in the township, but that decision raises numerous concerns because it doesn’t offer any indication that the municipality has undertaken due diligence and consideration of the facts, consultation with the public or First Nations people, or reflection on the actual environmental impact of a massive, heavy industrial float glass plant.
