Magazine publisher reeling after Wisler s threat to derail publication

View Comments A North Asheville magazine publisher says she is working to salvage tens of thousands of dollars in advertising revenue after Asheville City Councilwoman Gwen Wisler took issue with a recent article the magazine published. The article in question is on the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County s efforts to stop a Charlotte Street development, which is set to demolish a dozen old homes. It s critical of the developer s plans and does not quote developers or others in favor of the project. Wisler, who said she hasn t expressed an opinion for or against the development, acknowledges that she told Montford & North Asheville Neighbors Publisher Christine Priola in an email that she would reach out to all of your advertisers. However, she said she didn t actually reach out to any, and if the magazine has lost revenue, it s not from anything she did.

Asheville councilwoman protests closed session homeless shelter purchase

View Comments ASHEVILLE - A city councilwoman took the unusual step of publicly protesting a closed session, saying it was about buying real estate for homeless shelter, something that would fundamentally change the city s role by putting it in the lead of combatting a regional crisis. The council went into the closed session at the end of its May 11 meeting, with the public announcement as required by law that the session s purpose was to instruct staff on real estate negotiations. But Councilwoman Gwen Wisler revealed the nature of the purchase in a statement she read before the elected officials went behind closed doors. Wisler, a former Asheville vice mayor, said she disagreed with buying the property.

Asheville property taxes: more clarity on upcoming tax bills

Asheville property taxes: more clarity on upcoming tax bills ASHEVILLE - Following forecasts of a likely county property tax increase, city officials have not ruled out following suit with a city increase on top of it. City Council members did not say at an April 27 budget work session whether they would follow the county s lead and seek to raise the city tax rate. But Asheville budget staff revealed a revenue neutral tax rate that will help property owners begin calculating potential bills. Property owners pay layers of property taxes, starting with the county s and then including any rate charged by municipalities or other taxing authorities in which they lie. That means an Asheville property owner would pay the county rate, the city rate and possibly the Asheville City Schools rate. New rates take effect at the beginning of the July 1 fiscal year.
