How soon teachers can expect to get vaccinated depends largely on where they live and could determine whether the bulk of California’s students return to campuses this spring or next fall.
Teacher vaccinations have emerged as a central point of contention in California’s charged debate over reopening schools as unions representing teachers and school employees have listed vaccine access as one of their demands before returning to campuses.
How soon teachers can expect to get vaccinated depends largely on where they live and could determine whether the bulk of California’s students return to.
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) Getting the green light doesn t mean all school districts are a go to return their youngest students to in-person instruction.
Fresno Unified superintendent Bob Nelson says the district, which serves nearly 80,000 students, isn t deviating from October plans to only return to in-person instruction when the county reaches the orange tier.
Nelson says, We can t do this start then stop, start and stop , once we get kids back they need to be able to stay back. One of the provisions in the new guidelines are that you have to COVID-test the kids and faculty members that are going to come back and serve them.
More Fresno County elementary students to return to campus
The announcement impacts schools which were already in the process of phasing students back to in-person learning prior to winter break.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) Class will be back in session in person next week for thousands of Fresno County elementary school students after health officials determined county COVID case rates and healthcare system capacity are improving. It means you re going to be in a classroom 6 feet apart wearing masks, social distancing in place, said Fresno County Superintendent of Schools Jim Yovino.
NEW: Fresno Co. K-6 school sites, which were already in the process of phasing students back, can now resume their reopening. Students can return to campus as soon as Monday.
