Motz says CPC carbon pricing plan different, better than Liberals
Poll
Yes
Conservative MP Glen Motz has softened his stance on carbon pricing, but is ratcheting up criticism of how it’s currently applied as his party proposes alternatives.
Last week the Conservative Party and Leader Erin O’Toole released an outline of its environment policy, stating a $20 per tonne carbon price for consumers would be held in an account and remitting on certain purchases.
That has rankled some supporters following years of hard campaigning against the charge they’ve said is harmful to the oil and gas sector and the larger economy.
Motz says budget misses the mark
Poll
Yes
Medicine Hat MP Glen Motz says there could be positives in the federal budget announced Monday, but only if executed properly but the Liberal government.
But, the opposition MP says heavy spending, little new revenue and growing debt raises questions for him about sustainability of marque budget points from Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, such as a childcare program.
“There are far more things that are problematic and it doesn’t present the plan that Canadians are asking for,” he told reporters on a conference call Monday afternoon.
“We need to be talking about an economic recovery and that has to include all sectors of the economy.”
Local officials remain anti-carbon tax

Would you support the Conservative Party of Canada’s carbon tax plan of consumer pricing with ‘green’ savings account?
Yes
Regional politicians are still hopeful they can scrap the carbon tax despite a recent defeat from the Supreme Court and the federal Conservative Party’s adoption of a similar carbon price plan.
Federal party leader Erin O’Toole announced his environmental plan to reviews ranging from cool from some in his own party to verging on ridicule from some right-of-centre commentators.
This comes two weeks after delegates to the party’s national policy convention rejected including stronger language on climate change to broaden appeal outside of its core Western Canadian base of support
Dear editor,
The March 5 Glen Motz opinion piece, “Rebuilding economy a Conservative priority,” refers to the results of a consultation survey produced by the MP for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner. It is a statistical disaster.
It is of utmost importance in sampling that every member of the population from which the sample is drawn must have an equal probability of being chosen. Absent this, the sample is useless. Online polls, of which this is one, are notorious for producing non-random samples.
There is no indication that any effort was made to ensure respondents were citizens of MHCW, all members of the MP’s church or some other partisan group.
