Itâs been two years since publisher
Louise Adler and Melbourne University Press pointedly parted ways. So it must have been with some measure of whiplash that some of Melbourneâs more prominent citizens received an invitation from Adler and MUP to launch Adlerâs latest project.
Of course, not
that MUP, one or two slips of the tongue aside. Monash University Publishing (same acronym, different outfit) asked Adler, now a professorial fellow at that university, to âcurateâ its new In The National Interest series. The first cohort of 20,000-word, pamphlet-like books on topics of national importance was launched last Thursday night at Melbourneâs RACV Club, to a mostly local audience that due to recent captivities hadnât seen a canape in months.

The mists turned red as the shattered remnants of the East India Company’s armies fled Afghanistan across the snows of the Hindu Kush. Far from his home in Tiloi, near Amethi, Havildar Sitaram chronicled the downfall. “What dreadful signs I saw along the road legs and arms protruding through the snow, Europeans and Hindoostanees half-buried, horses and camels all dead”, he wrote of the winter of 1842. “We went on fighting, and losing men at every step: we were attacked in front, in the rear, and from the tops of the hills: in truth, it was hell itself”.

The University of Sydneyâs incoming vice-chancellor, former ABC managing director Mark Scott, is already facing opposition from his future academic staff who question how a leader without a scholarly background can understand their institution.
However, others say the struggling university sector needs leaders with experience in winning support from politicians and the public, and believe other institutions hunting for vice-chancellors may follow. The University of NSW, which has only just begun its search, also approached Mr Scott, multiple sources told the
Herald.

Mr Scott, the current secretary of the NSW Department of Education, will be the only vice-chancellor without a doctorate at a top 100 university when he takes over his new position in late July.
