New community garden in Guelph looking to make big expansion

GUELPH The West Village Co-Op is looking to help its community create a sustainable and accessible food source one seed at a time. The new community garden in Guelph is already looking to make a big expansion after just getting seeds in the ground three weeks ago. “It’s turning an empty field into a community hub for wellness, for food production, and for mental health,” said Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie. The co-op says there are currently 52 families and 171 total people already using the garden. “This is a priority neighbourhood said so by Wellington County, so there are a lot of marginalized families and a lot of families living in poverty,” said Corenda King, vice president of the co-op. “This is a great opportunity for us to get fresh fruits and vegetables onto the plates of these families.”

KITCHENER A day after the Ford government enacted a number of new stay-at-home order restrictions for Ontario, and before they reversed course, Waterloo Region residents joined many across the province pushing back. Among the frustrations Ontario residents had for the new set of rules announced Friday, the biggest backlash came from police being granted new power to stop anyone to ask where they live and why they’re not home. “We have made the deliberate decision to temporarily enhance police officer’s authority for the duration of the stay at home order,” said Ontario solicitor general Sylvia Jones on Friday.

KITCHENER Details about how the COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed in Waterloo are expected to be discussed during a Public Health update on Friday. It s a change to have a practice run, see what s complicating it, what goes well, and what doesn t go well, said Kelly Grinrod, an associate professor with the University of Waterloo s school of pharmacy. The pharmaceutical expert also expects one of the three hospitals in the area to be a future vaccination site. As it begins to roll out, it will continue to be centralized within cities, and less and less travel in the months coming up [will be needed], said Grinrod.
