Keighley Town Council s latest ward development grants are approved

MORE ward development grants have been approved by Keighley Town Council’s finance and audit committee. Councillor Julie Adams is using hers to support the work of Ma Kelly’s Kitchen, which is helping elderly and vulnerable people across the town with food parcels. The town council partnered with the group at Christmas to help deliver to over 200 residents. Councillor Abdul Shohid is allocating his funds in Lawkholme and Showfield to replace two benches and install a litter bin at Back Plover Street. “The benches currently in situ are a great asset – but are in need of some love!” he said.

Keighley project to help people into work

A PROJECT is being launched in Keighley aimed at helping people into work. The initiative is designed to give those who are currently jobless the skills and confidence needed to find suitable employment. Spearheading the venture is Keighley Town Council, in partnership with Craven College. As part of the Keighley Works project, people will be offered free access to a range of practical and educational resources and support – including focused training courses, work placements and accredited volunteering opportunities. Tailored help will be provided by a new town council trio of community key workers – Helen Bannister, Chris Corkindale and Sarah Barnes.

Over 900 have their say on Keighley projects during consultation

MORE than 900 people have had their say on a package of projects designed to rejuvenate Keighley and bolster its economic growth. The public was invited to give its views on 36 schemes, ranging from a one-way traffic system on Cavendish Street to new skills and training hubs, a health and wellbeing centre and a digital programme aimed at producing better and faster internet connections. Consultation began just before Christmas on the proposals, which form part of Keighley’s bid for up to £25 million from the Government Towns Fund. Now the Keighley Town Deal Board – which includes businesses, the MP, stakeholder organisations and representatives from the voluntary and community sectors, Bradford Council and Keighley Town Council – will decide which initiatives should go forward for submission at the end of this month.

Keighley allotments are in the frame: PHOTOS

The town council staged its first-ever allotment photo competition. And the event, designed to showcase Keighley’s hundreds of plots, was hailed as a huge success. Anyone with an allotment in the town could take part. Entries were judged by a panel comprising members of the town council’s allotments and landscapes committee who considered a range of factors, including technical ability, originality, creativity and composition. All winners will receive a session with award-winning gardener Steve Thorpe. Councillor Luke Maunsell said: “This was the first year of the competition and we were delighted with the response. “Keighley Town Council has over 400 allotments across 13 sites and we were pleased to be able to showcase just some of the hard work our allotment holders put into their plots.

Yorkshire Day honour for Keighley

KEIGHLEY has been chosen to host the official Yorkshire Day civic celebration in 2022. It is the first time the town has been awarded the honour, by the Yorkshire Society, since the annual event – which takes place on August 1 – began in 1985. The official celebration – believed to be the largest event of its kind in the world – sees the county’s mayors, civic leaders and other VIP guests gather for a breakfast reception, thanksgiving service, street parade and formal lunch. Keighley Town Council also aims to make it a community-focused event showcasing the county and the town. Councillor Peter Corkindale, town mayor, said: “We are delighted to have been invited to host Yorkshire Day in 2022. It is a great privilege to play a part in celebrating Yorkshire and Keighley. It will provide a great boost for the town’s tourism and economy.”
