Veteran detectives from 11 police departments will form a team, without a detective from the agency involved in the shooting, to conduct an impartial probe.
Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, the Loudoun County sheriff said, after a theft suspect drew a gun and opened fire. A second deputy returned fire, wounding the suspect, who was later taken into custody.
