CarolinaEast, UNC Health to work together in health care for Craven

CarolinaEast Health System is officially affiliated with UNC Health, the hospital announced today. Representatives of both health systems were at the CarolinaEast Medical Center to give the announcement on Wednesday during a press conference. CEHS CEO Ray Leggett stated that “Affiliating with UNC Health and working toward becoming a healthcare hub in this region is a tremendous opportunity for CarolinaEast and the people we serve. We look forward to working with UNC Health entities in Eastern North Carolina including Onslow, Wayne and Lenoir hospitals.” He emphasized that the hospital would remain independent. “We did not sell CarolinaEast,” he said. Craven Commissioners voted for legislation seeking partisan BOE elections

An effort to change elections for the Craven County Board of Education from non-partisan to partisan has drawn mixed reactions from local officials and citizens, ranging from the enthusiastically supportive to the vehemently negative. The legislation would also move school board elections away from the current county-wide general election to a district-based system. The push by North Carolina’s Republic-controlled legislature to move school boards to partisan elections in North Carolina has increased significantly since 2013. Currently, 35 of the state’s 115 public school districts run partisan elections, an increase from 23 in 2017. Onslow County recently went to partisan school board election and a controversial candidate, Eric Whitfield was elected. Whitfield was fired from a school for a racial post and the Onslow County GOP disavowed him. Whitfield ran as a Republican and was elected.

A Craven County Board of Education member has gone public with complaints

A member of the Craven County Board of Education has raised concerns about both the transparency of the school system administration and the number of current vacancies among teachers and other staff.  In a March 25 Facebook post, District 5 Board member Kelli Muse made public a series of text messages between herself and Craven County Schools Superintendent Meghan Doyle. In her texts to Doyle, Muse asks why the Board members do not have access to all district meetings, such as principals’ meetings. “I would like that setup, please. There are times I would like to sit in. Thanks. Can you let me know when that can be accomplished,” wrote Muse.

Board of Education addresses transparency, teacher vacancy issues

A controversy surrounding Craven County Board of Education members having access to the school system’s principals’ meetings has seemingly been settled. During their April 13 work session, the Board reached a consensus that going forward, the current principal of the year will update the board monthly with information from those meetings.  The issue was raised last month by BOE member Kelli Muse. In a March 25 Facebook post, Muse made public a series of texts between herself and Superintendent Meghan Doyle. In her texts to Doyle, Muse asked why the Board members do not have access to all district meetings, such as principals’ meetings.
