South Bend candy maker Claeys moving from city s core to outskirts for $8 million expansion

South Bend-based Claeys Candy plans to leave its longtime home south of downtown and build a modern $8 million production facility in the Blackthorn area. Company President Gregg Claeys said his grandfather, Jerome Claeys, founded the company in 1919 in two rented garages on North Blaine Avenue on the city’s northwest side. Since then it has moved into three other buildings, and has operated since 1941 from 525 S. Taylor St., which is roughly behind home plate at Four Winds Field. The company makes peanut brittle, fudge, and around the Christmas holiday season, Chocolate Charlie, which blends chocolate, peanuts and marshmallow into a local favorite. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, its hard candy sales have taken off, its orders backlogged 20 weeks, Claeys said.
