Searing heat in Minnesota is forcing school districts already concerned about indoor air quality amid the pandemic to consider further mechanical upgrades to buildings without air conditioning.
The temperature topped 100 degrees in at least one Minneapolis classroom in June before the district shifted students in 15 buildings without air conditioning to distance learning. Bloomington schools brought in portable air conditioning units to keep kids cool. St. Paul called off school altogether, ending the year a few days early.
The disruption further highlighted how the mechanical systems within school buildings play a key role in providing a safe learning environment for students. A group of teachers and parents are calling on Minneapolis Public Schools to ease its requirements to allow more students with outstanding class credits to participate in graduation ceremonies in June.
Supporters say the pandemic has made it harder for some students to keep up, and the commencement ceremony is an important ritual that should be available to seniors who plan to complete their classes in summer school.
A petition sponsored by the Minneapolis teachers union requests that the district allow all seniors who are within 2.25 credits of graduation requirements to be included in this year s ceremony. Under current district rules, students can walk at commencement if they are within 0.75 credits of those necessary to graduate.
