President mourns Murahwa, Mpofu Sunday Mail Reporter PRESIDENT Mnangagwa yesterday sent condolence messages to the Murahwa and Mpofu families following the death of former Director in the Office of the President Cde Beaven Shungu Murahwa and Member of Parliament for Mberengwa South, Cde Alum Mpofu. Cde Murahwa succumbed to diabetes yesterday morning, while Cde Mpofu collapsed and died at his home on Sunday last week. In a statement, President Mnangagwa described Cde Murahwa as one of the bravest freedom fighters during the liberation war. “The death this morning of Cde Beaven Shungu Murahwa after a long battle against diabetes was a great loss to our nation,” he said.

Cde Mpofu, who reportedly had a long history of kidney problems, collapsed at his home in Masvingo on Monday and was pronounced dead on admission at a local hospital. Relatives and politicians, including Government officials, thronged the late legislator’s rural home to pay their last respects. Early this month, Cde Mpofu moved a motion to enact a law that prohibits any Zimbabwean from communicating false information that harms the country’s interests.

In his eulogy at the burial of former Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Deputy Commissioner Moses Griffiths Mpofu at the National Heroes Acre yesterday, the President said the country should leverage on the legacy bequeathed by its heroes to create a prosperous future. “I am aware that our youths are crying out for pieces of land and are eager to work the land,” he said. “The inquiry we launched on agricultural land has identified lots of land which is vacant, underutilised and belonging to multiple owners.

Mpofu declared national hero - Zimbabwe Situation

Mpofu declared national hero Joseph Madzimure  Senior Reporter FORMER police Deputy Commissioner Moses Griffiths Mpofu who died last week, has been declared a national hero. He was 66. ZANU PF Secretary for Administration Dr Obert Mpofu confirmed the development saying: “The Politburo has unanimously declared ZRP Deputy Commissioner (Retired) Cde Griffiths Mpofu as a national hero after considering the role he played during the libertion struggle and his position in the police force before his retirement. “He was consistent through and through and was very patriotic until the time of his death.” The family of the late national hero has already been informed about the hero status. Burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
