Homes For Our Troops this weekend kicked off the building of a specially adapted home for an injured soldier. The home is being built in Derry for Army Sgt. Brandon Korona. In 2013, Sgt. Korona was in Afghanistan when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He suffered significant injuries to his lower left leg and, eventually, it was amputated. The organization is building a single-story, four-bedroom, two-bathroom house on 10 acres. The home will have around 40 special adaptations. “It’s a sense of freedom. It’s a sense of being able to do what we want to do, when we want to do it. It’s financial freedom and there really isn t anything that we won’t be able to do once we get this home,” Sgt. Korona said.To date, Homes For Our Troops has built 315 specially adapted homes for severely injured post-9/11 veterans. This is the organization’s second build in New Hampshire.
Freschi Construction workers have been hard at work framing the future home of U.S. Navy veteran Ryan Sykes. The Grass Valley native was injured while serving in Afghanistan and is being offered the home through the Homes For Our Troops program.
