Stella Ann Hunkins Garitz

Stella Ann Hunkins Garitz, 87, a longtime resident of Watertown, NY passed away peacefully on Monday, July 26, 2021, at Tiffany Springs Senior Living Community in Kansas City, Missouri where she recently moved to be closer to her family. Stella was born March 2, 1934, in the Village of Gouverneur, NY to the late Ernest and Lucille (Wells) Hunkins. Stella graduated from Gouverneur High School as the Class President in 1951, with her bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University and her master’s degree in Library Science in 1955 from Syracuse University. She began her teaching career as a librarian in September 1955 in North Creek, NY. She also taught at the Liverpool School District from 1957 until moving to Watertown with her family in 1965. Stella began her career as the elementary schools librarian with the Watertown City School District in 1971 and achieved tenure in September 1975. After retirement from her 36 year librarian career in 1997, she remained active in the

Gouverneur and St Lawrence County Fair returns after 2020 COVID cancellation

GOUVERNEUR — The Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair is back after last year’s COVID-19 cancellation. The fair will kick off on Aug. 3, opening at 4 p.m. and ending with a performance from country band, Lonestar, at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $25. “The fair will be open from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. every day besides Tuesday,” said Fair Manager Don Peck. “Admission will be free, it’s been free for the last 12 to 15 years and will stay that way.” On Aug. 4, the fair will include a performance from the Gouverneur Central School band at 1:30 p.m., 4-H and Open Sheep Show at 1:30 p.m., Carlton Peck Awards at 2:30 p.m., the Fireman’s Parade at 7 p.m., and more.

Bernard H Bernie Knowlton | Obituaries

Bernard H. “Bernie” Knowlton, age 85, of Gouverneur, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021 at Canton - Potsdam Hospital. He was born in Gouverneur, NY on March 5, 1936, a son of Howard A. and Thelma Fleming Knowlton. He married the former Doris Rose in 1964. A previous marriage ended in divorce. Bernie was raised on the family farm in Macomb and graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1954. He went to work for St. Lawrence County when they were building the “Genesee Trail”, County Route 10. Bernie then started his employment with Kinney Drugs that fall and was an active employee until 1990 when illness forced him to go on disability. He started at Kinney’s as a truck driver, was a store clerk, a buyer, and advanced to become distribution center and traffic manager.
