DERBY The new staff members hired by the Derby Board of Education June 1 come from across the country, and across town.
One new special education teacher is coming to the city schools from Illinois. Another is a 2017 Derby High School graduate.
Jim Gildea, the chairman of the board of education, welcomed incoming special education teacher Elenna Reyes.
“We welcome you here and we’re a much cooler state too. So, welcome to the family,” Gildea said.
COVE â No campfires will be burning on Cove Elementary Schoolâs campus this summer yet it may have a summer camp-like atmosphere.
The school will be the site of a new School Enrichment Program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, one in which students will discover that learning about math, science and art can be as enjoyable as roasting marshmallows.
âIt will be more like a summer camp than a school,â Cove School School District Superintendent Earl Pettit said.
Each day, students will participate in organized physical activities and engage in free reading or artistic activities of their choosing. Students will also complete a Science, Technology, Engineering, Artistic and Math program task aligned with the mission and goals of the school.
UNION COUNTY â Union County voters approved a levy to control weeds and elected several new members to school boards.

March 1, 1937 â May 10, 2021
âTwas 1937 that a mid-February blizzard blocked the 12 miles of road between Cove and La Grande, Oregon.
Edward Harvey Campbell, who was serving as superintendent of the Cove School District, and his wife, Carmen Olive Celestine Touvenel Campbell, were expecting their first child. Mrs. Proctor, the Cove postmaster, organized a brigade of farmers and ranchers to open one lane of the road to get Mrs. Campbell to the Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande. They got there but, no baby appeared. Not liking that cold bumpy ride in mid-February, I decided to wait until there was warmth and sunshine, which there was on March 1. Such was the weather when I made my debut to the world. I think spiliyay taught me that trick.
