A Jeannette church this month will host its first Mass since August, when it was forced to close. The interior of Sacred Heart Parish won’t look exactly the same, though, and costly water damage repairs loom amid hopes to revive the city’s Catholic presence. Plaster has either fallen or been removed from most interior walls, exposing brick in the English Gothic-style building that dates back to the 1920s. Deacon Bill Newhouse, who has been appointed administrator, will be leading the work on a plan for the building and reinvigorating interest in Jeannette.

Council tackles McGowan problem house next week

356 McGowan Ave. The case of a vacant, charred pigeon-infested house owned by a self-admitted hoarder goes to City council Tuesday. Staff recommend that the City request additional improvements by owner Lynda Watt, who has not lived in the home since the September 2008 fire. In an almost 200-page report to council, City property use inspector Dave Jones said Watt has given the City multiple written and verbal commitments to show good intentions. She has also done some minor repairs and remediation, but has fallen short of agreed-upon expectations. As such, City staff request additional remedial action requirements be imposed. Watt s neighbours want the situation to end, and end fast.
