That was the forecast at a conference Julie Kennedy attended several years ago.
âNow we are starting to see that water is a rich commodity,â Kennedy, Grand Rapids Public Utilities general manager said.
Several Iron Range municipalities are asking residents, businesses and other users to conserve water as a summer-long drought lingers.
So far, the conservation requests are voluntarily.
âWe did voluntary efforts probably about a month ago, specifically irrigation,â Kennedy said. âPeople say, I can deal with my yard dying, but I just put $1,000 worth of shrubs in . We re asking people to take shorter showers, turn off the water when they re brushing their teeth, and to sprinkle between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.â
HOYT LAKES The Saturday night fireworks have been cancelled because of fire danger with the tinder-dry conditions, but the Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival cancelled last year because of the pandemic promises to be a real crowd-pleaser. The festivities run today through Sunday, July 25.
Committee member Nikki Swanson told the Mesabi Tribune there will be fireworks next year, bigger and better, and that she is just so excited to see people. This is the 66th year of the carnival. It costs just $10 for all events all weekend long. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.

Crews discovered an old, muck-covered station wagon in a Woodbury lake while they were preparing to remove weeds.
The vehicle, which was found on the east side of Colby Lake about 30-50 feet from shore, was pulled from the lake on Saturday, Police Commander John Altman told Bring Me The News.

Altman explained the Woodbury Parks and Recreation Division began working with area partners to clean weeds out of the lake. They contracted with a company to assess the lake, and while touring it in a small rowboat, an inspector spotted the roof of a car a few feet below the surface of the lake.
