2020 sports awards: The good and the bad from a year like no other

Team of the year – Crusaders and Canterbury women Nobody likes joint winners. It’s usually an easy way out, one used to prevent dissent. But these two Christchurch-based teams can only share this award, having both won their fourth straight title in 2020. Kai Schwoerer/Getty Images Canterbury were elated after winning their fourth straight Farah Palmer Cup title in front of their fans at Rugby Park in Christchurch. The Crusaders’ Super Rugby Aotearoa triumph was their fourth in as many years under Scott Robertson, and their record-extending 11th overall. Jonathan Moore/Getty Images New Zealander Scott Dixon has now won the IndyCar championship six times and has AJ Foyt’s record firmly in his sights.

Mark Reason: The 2020 Misnomers highlight significant forces for sporting good

SPARK SPORT Black Caps seamer Tim Southee closed in on 300 test wickets on day three of the first test against Pakistan, taking two of the four he needed. OPINION: The Halbergs may be crying in a corner and pretending that 2020 did not happen, but the Misnomers are made of stiffer sinews. The Halberg Foundation may have chosen to bypass their annual awards, but the Misnomers know that in this year above all other years, we need a good celebration. We acknowledge the superb talents of Israel Adesanya, Scott Dixon and Courtney Duncan, but this did not seem to be the year to reward people for physical violence or pouring pollution into the atmosphere. So no cake there, then.

Duncan was waiting for her custom Kawasaki parts to arrive from Europe before announcing that she would be jumping on-board a 2021 KX250 to compete with the cream of New Zealand s female riders in the elite class. The parts will not turn up in time but in typical Duncan fashion, she has shrugged off the set-back and will ride her Kawasaki in standard-spec.
