Gymnastics review recommendations very difficult to action

Photo: PHOTOSPORT The findings of a report into the culture of Gymnastics New Zealand have laid bare the abuse and a raft of recommendations have been made, but some people were not happy about how the three-month long investigation was carried out. From poor physical and mental well-being, worries about body image, eating disorders and limited access to medical treatment; being forced to train on injuries and wear leotards - which made them feel vulnerable or embarassed - the negative influence of decades of foreign coaching methods, many of them abusive, became normalised. As former Commonwealth Games gymnast Olivia Jöbsis detailed - it went well beyond being the best at a sport.

Mark Reason: The 2020 Misnomers highlight significant forces for sporting good

SPARK SPORT Black Caps seamer Tim Southee closed in on 300 test wickets on day three of the first test against Pakistan, taking two of the four he needed. OPINION: The Halbergs may be crying in a corner and pretending that 2020 did not happen, but the Misnomers are made of stiffer sinews. The Halberg Foundation may have chosen to bypass their annual awards, but the Misnomers know that in this year above all other years, we need a good celebration. That does not mean there is not going to be a twist in our supreme awards. We acknowledge the superb talents of Israel Adesanya, Scott Dixon and Courtney Duncan, but this did not seem to be the year to reward people for physical violence or pouring pollution into the atmosphere. So no cake there, then.
