Share Texas A&M University junior Courtney Eoff, a marketing major from Rockdale, earned the top spot for “Best Original Song” in the 2020 jingle contest for the “Don’t Mess With Texas” anti-littering campaign. Her 30-second song was chosen from more than 130 entries. She joins musicians including fellow Aggie Lyle Lovett in promoting the campaign, launched by the Texas Department of Transportation in 1985. Eoff said she comes from a musical family and “was humming before I could even talk.” She grew up listening to country and western icons like Willie Nelson, George Strait and LeAnn Rimes, whose jingles also have been used in the campaign over the years.

Her skills were really put to the test in late 2020, when she entered a song writing contest for Don’t Mess With Texas, the anti-littering campaign hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation.

While I do hope to pursue music full time, I value education, the sophomore said.  This wasn t Eoff s first win. In 2019 she and a friend won the Houston Rodeo Rockstar competition. Now thanks to the song search competition, she said she ll be able to make more music with her prize.  I ended up winning a $5,000 at-home recording studio and I don t know, I would never be able to go out and buy something like that for myself, Eoff said.  She comes from generations of Texans and she said she s proud to be from the Lone Star state and she s honored to have been chosen to be part of the campaign.

Veterans and their beneficiaries could see their stimulus check sooner than later. The Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday that it plans to begin processing stimulus checks for Veterans Affairs benefit recipients at the end of this week.  The agency said it is continuing to review files from the VA covering individuals who receive benefits but don t normally file a tax return. Assuming no issues pop up, the IRS said it will begin processing the payment files this week and the majority of the payments will be disbursed electronically and should be received on Wednesday, April 14.  Freddie Gillespie, former Baylor star, signed a 10-day contract with the Toronto Raptors.
