Over 80% of Minnesota police chiefs say they support the use of body-worn cameras by police officers, according to a recent survey conducted by the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association. Red Wing Police Department uses the technology. However, the Goodhue County Sheriffâs Office doesnât due to financial challenges.
âMore agencies, large and small, are deploying body-worn cameras, or considering their deployment, to gather crucial evidence and enhance transparency with their communities,â said MCPA Executive Director Jeff Potts in a news release.
Of the 214 police chiefs who responded to the survey, 100 said their departments are using the technology.
Gordon Rohr, newly appointed Red Wing police chief, said the department started employing Axon body cameras during the fall of 2020 after testing out three options. All sworn officers are equipped with cameras.

The Recall City Hall committee collected a second round of petition signatures and submitted those petitions to the Red Wing city clerk last week. On Monday, the city council voted against holding a recall election for Hove which will likely lead to litigation. (Contributed by George Hintz)
RED WING Gordon Rohr is Red Wing s new police chief.
Rohr, who has been with the department for several years and served as an assistant chief, will make $121,326 in his new position, according to an offer letter from the city.
RED WING The city no longer has an interim police chief. On Monday the City Council unanimously voted to appoint Interim Chief Gordon Rohr to police chief.Â
Council Administrator Kay Kuhlmann said on Monday, âI do feel like he s the right person right now to help us through this challenging time, and Gordon has a lot of experience. He s worked for the city for a long time, he s worked for another city. He has a great relationship internally in the department, and I think he is going to be a great leader for the city.âÂ
Rohr has been with the department since 2002 when he was hired as a patrol officer. During his tenure, Rohr has served as a field training officer, a patrol sergeant and operations captain. Rohr has served as interim chief since Feb. 9.Â
