Coimbatore: Seven women from Jharkhand, who were rescued from a private spinning mill at Narasimhanaickenpalayam here on Thursday evening, were sent to their hometown on Friday.
Police refused to initiate action against the mill owners even after Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) cadres alerted them, CITU district president C Padmanaban said. “After receiving information about seven women aged between 18 and 25 locked up in Kumaran spinning mill, we tried to contact senior police officers, but received no response. We were planning to conduct a protest in front of the mill when the mill management sent the women out. We rescued them and brought them to the CITU office at Kattoor,” he said.
The arrested person belonged to Vellakovil in Tirupur district, who was working as an ambulance driver.
The 17-year-old girl, a native of Tirupathur district, had come to Karumathampatti in Coimbatore district three months ago to work in a textile mill. “She was staying in the staff quarters. The accused had met the girl through a mutual friend. Meanwhile, the girl’s father visited the mill on July 9 to take her back to the hometown. When the girl and her father reached the Coimbatore Railway Junction, she left him on the pretext of buying a bottle of water. When she failed to return, her father lodged a complaint with the Race Course police, who registered a missing case,” a police officer said.

Coimbatore: The entire city was deserted on the first Sunday of complete lockdown during the Covid-19 second wave.
All shops, except pharmacies and petrol pumps, were closed. As 500 police personnel were deployed across the city, very few people were roaming freely. The cops stopped all those who were on roads and questioned them. Most of them had stepped out to visit hospitals, buy medicines or on the way to the railway station.
Meanwhile, hundreds of guest workers were found at the Coimbatore Railway Junction, waiting for the Dhanbad Express and Gorakhpur Express. Most of them had reached the station on Saturday night.
