Representative image CHENNAI: Public health officials on Monday warned that Chennai, the worst affected district, could run out of oxygen beds as Tamil Nadu reported 6,711 new cases and 19 deaths. The state had 46,308 active cases after 2,339 people were discharged. For the second consecutive day, Chennai reported more than 2,000 cases. The hotspot city had 2,105 new cases and 17,098 active cases 36% of those cases under treatment in the state. While senior officials met at the secretariat with plans to ramp up testing, aggressively enforce pandemic protocols, keep a check on stock of life saving drugs, and initiate early treatment, hospital administrators were keeping a tab on the number of beds and redirecting patients with mild or no symptoms either to home quarantine or to covid care centres.

The accident happened around 9.20am on Sunday. COIMBATORE: Five people have died in two road accidents in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu since Saturday night. Three members of a family, including a six- year-old girl, died on the spot when a truck rammed their car on the Kamanaickenpalayam -Palladam Road on Sunday morning. The deceased have been identified as V Karthikeyan, 36, of Vallakundapuram village near Dhali, his wife K Saranya, 33, and their daughter K Dhanya, 6. Karthikeyan was working as a software engineer in Bengaluru. The family came to their native village a few days ago. The accident happened around 9.20am when they were returning to Bengaluru. Before ramming their car, the truck had hit another car. The passengers of the first other car escaped without injuries.

COIMBATORE: Tension gripped in Coimbatore after a Hindu Munnani functionary was assaulted with an iron rod by two unidentified men on Saturday night. The injured man has been identified as S Ramakrishnan, 36, of Thayammal Layout at Podanur. He is the vice-president of Hindu Munnani unit in Ukkadam. Ramakrishnan, who suffered injuries on his head, was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). Police said Ramakrishnan, who was engaged in catering work, was returning home from Kempatti Colony on his motorcycle around 10.30pm. When he reached Sundarapuram Junction, two men waylaid him and assaulted him with an iron rod.

COIMBATORE: DMK candidate in Thondamuthur assembly constituency Karthikeya Sivasenapathy on Tuesday alleged that he was assaulted by AIADMK men outside a polling in Selvapuram. Tension gripped outside the polling station after the members of the two parties clashed with each other. Sivasenapathy visited a polling station at the government primary school in Selvapuram in the morning to check polling. While he was returning, Sivasenapathy was surrounded by AIADMK and BJP cadres. They raised slogans against him. DMK cadre rescued Sivasenapathy from the crowd. A clash erupted between the members of the AIADMK and the DMK. The police intervened and pacified them.
