Coimbatore: The revenue divisional officer (RDO) has initiated an inquiry against sub-inspector (SI) Muthu for beating up customers and employees of an eatery at Gandhipuram on the night of April 11.
A police source said the RDO would hold inquiry with the hotel employees, hotel owner and police officials and send the final report to the city police commissioner soon. “If the RDO recommends, we will register an FIR against Muthu.” The video of 36-year-old Muthu, who was attached to Kattoor police station, thrashing people having dinner at Sri Raja Hotel at Gandhipuram had gone viral on social media on April 12.

COIMBATORE: A sub-inspector of police was placed under suspension on Monday after a video of him beating up customers and employees of a restaurant at Gandhipuram on Sunday night went viral on social media.
B Mohanraj of Ram Nagar owns Sri Raja Hotel at Gadhipuram. Around 10pm on Sunday, a cop from Kattoor police station came to the restaurant and told Mohanraj to down the shutters immediately as inspector Latha would be coming for night patrol. As the customers were having dinner in the restaurant, he kept the shutter half-closed.
Around 10.20pm, sub-inspector Muthu, 36, attached to the Kattoor (law & order) police, entered the restaurant with a baton in hand.

The Coimbatore City Police have given strict instructions to personnel attached to all the police stations and traffic units to maintain composure while doing regular duty and enforcing restrictions announced by the State government for the management COVID-19 pandemic.
The instructions were given after a Sub-Inspector attached to the Kattoor police station was caught on camera beating up the diners and the staff of a hotel at Gandhipuram with a lathi on Sunday night. The officer, Muthu, was placed under suspension on Monday evening after the incident drew strong criticism from various quarters.
