Copeland Council urges tourism businesses to help create tailor-made talent

COPELAND Council is on the lookout for tourism and hospitality businesses who would like to help create and employ tailor-made talent. The Copeland Work and Skills Partnership, led by Copeland Borough Council, runs academies to help unemployed residents get the basic skills, experience and confidence needed to get back into work. At a time when many tourism businesses are struggling to recruit, the partnership wants to run an academy specific to the tourism and hospitality sector. Copeland Mayor, Mike Starkie, said: This is an innovative way to fill vacancies that has already proved successful in earlier academies. They feature short, sector-specific training courses, mock interviews, work experience and support with applications. They re delivered in partnership with employers who have current or future vacancies, and participants are guaranteed an interview at the end.

Training could give unemployed head start 10/04/2021 Unemployed residents are being offered training to give them a head start in the hospitality and tourism sector. The Copeland Work and Skills Partnership, led by Copeland Borough Council, is offering the Welcome Host Gold course. The one-day course trains people in customer services and is considered the ‘gold standard’ in the industry. Chris Pickles, Copeland’s work and skills programme officer, said: “The course covers the core skills needed to deliver excellent customer service in an ever-changing industry that is currently growing in Copeland.” Participants learn to Understand their frontline sales and service role

Wage subsidy scheme supports Copeland businesses A wage subsidy scheme supporting Copeland’s businesses and residents is being hailed a success. Copeland Work and Skills Partnership is incentivising employers to take on new recruits with the support of a wage subsidy. Eighty-two per cent of businesses involved have retained staff originally taken on as part of the 26-week programme that is run exclusively in Copeland. Supported by DWP and Cumbria County Council’s Community Learning and Skills team, the scheme – the latest phase of the Copeland Work and Skills Programme run by Copeland Council – offers a contribution of up to £2,500 towards wage and training costs of taking on a new recruit.
