Alice Tetsuko Kono was cleaning her parents house in Molokai, Hawaii, when she heard the news about Pearl Harbor. Her radio began to chirp an urgent broadcast about the Japanese attack. She ran to tell her parents, and the family kept the radio on all day as more reports flowed in. That December day arguably changed the course of Kono s life, as it likely had the lives of many other young people of her generation. Just two years later, she enlisted in the Women s Army Corps and began a journey that would take her to California, Texas, Georgia, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C. The experience would test her mentally and physically and ultimately teach her one of her greatest lessons be useful. She shared her experiences in an oral history with the Veterans History Project in 2004.
Here in Hawai‘i, peak mango season runs from May through September, and soon we’ll be dipping our chopsticks into tubs of crunchy mango that’s been pickling in tangy, sweet, mouth-puckering juice. (Our mouths are already watering.) Surprisingly, HONOLULU Magazine writes: “While we might think pickled mango is a uniquely Hawai‘i treat, it’s not. It is made in Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and no doubt other places where mangoes are thriving.” That hit a sour note. We thought the crack-seed-shop staple we grew up with originated here. However, the article continues to say, “What makes pickled mango special in Hawai‘i is the balance of vinegary tartness with the sweetness of sugar, the red food coloring used by some cooks, and perhaps, a little flavor kick from li hing mui, the five spice, sugar-and-salt-preserved plum.” Agreed. Would we trust a pickled mango without li hing mui? Probably not.

Diamond Head State Monument on Oʻahu Will Reopen on Thursday
The popular visitor attraction is slated to reopen to the public on Dec. 17 after a nine-month closure.

Here are the new rules if you want to venture up the popular hiking trail:
You must always wear a mask in the park.
You must practice social distancing.
The park will be open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The park is closed on those three days due to limited staffing, to assess health and safety protocols and to conduct additional maintenance.
