The Regent opened on Boxing Day with a showing of The Taming of the Shrew starring Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. The cinema served the community for more than forty years until July 1973, when it became the Mecca Social and Bingo Club. This, in turn, shut down in February 1982 before being restored to its former art deco style.
