The Cotter High School softball team was crowned the champions of the 2A-1 District Tournament on Thursday in Flippin. The tournament began with the semifinals as the Lady Warriors beat Yellville-Summit 22-8, and the host Lady Bobcats topped Decatur. Cotter later beat Flippin 5-3 in the title game.
The 2A-1 District Baseball Tournament began Thursday at the Equity Bank Sports Complex in Harrison with two local teams winning the opening games. Cotter beat Decatur, and Yellville-Summit topped Alpena.
The semifinals were held in the evening session, and Cotter fell to top-seeded Flippin 13-0. Philip Pasthing picked up the win with a complete game, five strikeouts and two hits. Jackson Jones and Preston Belding led the Bobcats’ offense by each going two-for-two.
Two Cotter High School seniors have been named Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholars.
Carlie Williams and Landon Francis were each recently honored with that designation. The scholarship pays tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board up to $10,000 per year.
According to the Arkansas Department of Higher Education’s website, “the Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship is the most academically rigorous scholarship program offered for those graduating seniors scoring either 32 on the ACT or 1410 on the SAT and a 3.50 academic grade point average.”

Sierra Pieper
Sierra Pieper, a senior at John Marshall High School, has qualified for the Minnesota Speech Coaches Association All-State Speech Team.
Pieper was one of 122 competitors from 53 different high schools to earn a spot on the team. Pieper was the only student from Rochester to receive the recognition.
To qualify for All-State recognition, speakers must achieve a series of milestones established by the speech coaches association. Those qualifications include being a senior in high school, documented excellence in competition, including competing on subsection/section teams and at least one appearance at the Minnesota State High School League s state tournament, and utilizing their speech skills in at least three other activities, such as National Honor Society, dramatics or athletics. The Cotter High School softball team wrapped up its regular season on a positive note Tuesday. The Lady Warriors defeated Viola 12-8.
Salem’s regular season finale ended with a 10-1 victory over Mammoth Spring. The Lady Bears fall to 17-4 on the season, and their first game in the 1A-3 District Tournament will be Friday at Armorel.
Melbourne was able to secure a regional tournament berth after winning its first game in the 2A-2 District Tournament at Tuckerman. The Lady Bearkatz beat up on White County Central 11-4. Melbourne will face Salem in the semifinals on Thursday.
Bergman watched its season come to an end in the first game of the 3A-1 District Tournament. The Lady Panthers fell to Green Forest 23-5.
