Santa Barbara’s No. 1 doubles team of Koko Kelly and Heidi Hatton swept their three sets, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5.
“It was great to see Heidi swinging freely,” Dons coach Danny Echt said. “Both Koko and Heidi had to come up big by holding serve to close out two of the sets. I was very pleased with the chemistry between the two as this was their first time playing together.”
However, Harvard Westlake prevailed in singles by an 8-1 count.
“The Dons singles players faced very tough opposition,” Echt said. “Overall, it was a great experience playing against this kind of quality opponent.”
She kept her focus and fire to win the tiebreaker and the match, he said.
The girls doubles final was an all-Santa Barbara battle. No. 1 seeded Charlotte Ryan and Koko Kelly defeated teammates and second seeded Natalie Brewer and Katie Clyne for the league title, 6-1, 6-0. As an individual event, it means that there are situations where you must compete against your own teammates, said Echt. All three Dons doubles teams showed the best tennis of the year by not losing to any other school in the competition. Definitely a bummer to have to play your own mates, but the Dons had to eventually as they knocked all other doubles teams out.
