A global scientific body has declared Canada at “negligible” risk for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, 18 years after this country’s mad cow crisis rocked Canadian agriculture.
The official recognition granted Thursday by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) means Canada now has the most preferred status under the OIE’s three-tiered categorization system for evaluating BSE risk. Since 2007, Canada has been classed as having “controlled” risk for the fatal disease that affects the nervous systems of cattle.
