KOCHI: The Container Road, which had gained notoriety due to fatal accidents caused by the illegal parking of trucks, has now become a septic waste and garbage dumping spot. Recently, the Mulavukad police took the driver and cleaner of a tanker lorry into custody for dumping septage into the river near ward 11 of the panchayat.“This has been going on for quite some time,” said Abhijith Mulavukad, a resident of ward 11.

But it began to rain heavily again around afternoon.
Power outage was reported from many areas in the morning, as KSEB personnel began mending broken power lines and a few posts which got uprooted in Friday’s intense wind and rainfall and trees falling down.
The cannabis was hidden in mangoes being transported in the vehicle.

KOCHI: In a major haul, Excise sleuths seized 150 kg of ganja in the city and arrested two persons in connection with the incident.State Excise Enforcement Squad arrested the accused while they were transporting cannabis from Hyderabad in a pick-up van at Anavathil on Container Road in the city on Tuesday night. The cannabis was hidden in mangoes being transported in the vehicle.
Nandakumar, 27, a native of Kalmandapam, Palakkad, and Kunjumon, 36, of Walayar, were arrested after a surveillance launched in Palakkad, Malappuram and Ernakulam districts following an alert that drug trafficking would be rampant due to closure of bars and liquor outlets as part of lockdown-like restrictions imposed in state.

Clarity sought on monthly pass after NHAI announces increase in toll rates
After the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced an increase in toll rates at its toll plazas in keeping with the wholesale price index (WPI), the residents of Mulavukad and other areas in the Goshree Islands have demanded clarity on the monthly pass granted to their non-commercial vehicles, and the implementation of the long-pending proposal to ready service roads and install street lights on the 16-km-long Container Road. The NHAI must complete construction of service roads on the stretch, especially at Mulavukad, as was promised at many meetings, said Abhijit K. John, president of a group of residents’ associations in Mulavukad. It had also not yet installed street lights on the accident-prone stretch, he said.

Mumbai: MACT orders â¹20 lakh payout to kin of 26-year-old handcart puller who died after truck mishap
A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Mumbai has ordered a truck owner and an insurance company to pay a compensation of over Rs. 20 lakh to the young widow, six-year-old son and the parents of a 26-year-old labourer who had succumbed to injuries in 2016 after being knocked down by a truck in Mazgaon.
The claimants had sought compensation of Rs. 10 lakhs. As per the claim, on October 17, 2016, the deceased Pankaj Kumar was pulling a handcart loaded with aluminium pipes along with other labourers around 2.15 PM on Container Road near Eastern Express Freeway at Mazgaon. As per the FIR registered at Sewri police station, a rashly-driven truck hit them. Another labourer died before admission to the hospital. Kumar died during treatment.
