MALTA The labor shortage was on display Tuesday in the foyer of the Malta Price Chopper:
One hour into a job fair, there were two empty chairs and a single name on a list of job applicants.
To a greater or lesser degree, the multistate grocery chain is seeing similar response to job openings at its other locations.
Overall, Price Chopper and Market 32 supermarkets are short roughly 2,000 full- and part-time retail employees.
That works out to just a handful per store, enough that the staff might feel stretched but the shelves are still full and checkouts run smoothly. When you add in 130 other supermarkets in six states with a similar handful of openings, the help-wanted numbers add up quickly.

Instacart Expands Online Food-Stamp Payments, Challenging Rivals

(Bloomberg) Instacart Inc. is increasing the number of stores where it accepts online payments for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants, moving the online grocery delivery giant into competition with Amazon.com Inc. and Walmart Inc.. for a growing pool of consumers using federal assistance to buy food online.
The San Francisco-based startup is partnering with three retailers, Publix Super Markets Inc., The Save Mart Companies and Golub Corp.âs Price Chopper/Market 32, to allow Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) payments in more than 1,500 additional U.S. stores. The expansion is about a 60% increase in availability for SNAP online purchasing through Instacart, which began in October with a partnership with ALDI.

In the city of Schenectady’s long history, the 15 eventful years before and after the turn of the 20th century have no parallel. Those three decades, you could say, were electric.
Well, times in the “Electric City” have changed, and, according to Golub Corp. Executive Board President Neil Golub, Schenectady needs a new nickname.
During an hour-long presentation before the City Council last week, Golub suggested that Schenectady Metro better represents current-day Schenectady and its accomplishments of the past three decades.
