New York [US], February 25 (ANI): A new form of coronavirus variant is spreading rapidly in New York City and it carries a worrisome mutation that may weaken the effectiveness of vaccines, according to The New York Times.
As per the research by two teams, the new variant B.1.526 first appeared in samples collected in New York in November. However, by the middle of February, it appeared in about one in four viral sequences in the database shared by the scientists.
According to CNN, the experts have said that it appears in people affected in diverse neighbourhoods of New York City, they said, and is scattered in the Northeast .
US Daily COVID Fatalities Back To 3000+ Level After 10 Days
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - The daily death toll from coronavirus infection in the United States returned to the 3000-plus level after a gap of 10 days.
With 3230 new deaths reporting in the last 24 hours, the total U.S. COVID-19 fatalities rose to 505890, as per Johns Hopkins University s latest data.
73392 new cases of coronavirus infections were reported in the country in the same period, taking the national total to 28334981.
A total of 54,118 COVID patients are currently admitted in the U.S. hospitals, according to COVID Tracking Project. Out of this, 11,026 patients are admitted in Intensive Care Units.

The variant, called B.1.526, has emerged in diverse neighborhoods in New York City and in the various parts of the Northeast, according to researchers.
Concerningly, one of its mutations is the same as one found in the variant first detected in South Africa (B.1.351) a change that seems to somewhat weaken the body’s immune response to vaccines.
