The Daily Herald For 20-year-old Julia Andres, Saturday marked a new chapter for both her and her family as she accepted her diploma at the Columbia State Community College drive-thru spring commencement ceremony amid continued precautions against COVID-19. A center on the college’s soccer team, Andres became the first person in her family to receive a college degree. Cheered on by family, friends and faculty, like Andres, more than 300 hundred graduating students briefly stepped out of their vehicles to pick up their diplomas and take a photograph before leaving the campus as alumni. The ceremony marked the first return to campus for many of the graduating students since the institution has held the majority of its classes remotely in an effort to protect students, professors and their families against coronavirus.
