A Dozen Inmates Test Positive For Covid At Spokane County Jail

Spokane County has a new coronavirus outbreak at the downtown jail. The county says a dozen inmates at the downtown facility have tested positive. The jail division has dedicated two floors to quarantine inmates and keep them away from the rest of the jail population for two weeks. There are no confirmed cases among jail staff. And, the county says, no confirmed cases among inmates at the Geiger Corrections Center on the West Plains. That was the site of a larger outbreak in December, when several dozen people tested positive, though none were hospitalized.   Spokane County’s outbreaks behind bars have been mild compared to past outbreaks at other correctional facilities, including Airway Heights. One reason is that the county released a few hundred inmates early in the pandemic. But that population has increased from the 500 range to 784 as of Wednesday.

Spokane corrections center reports 79 COVID-19 inmate cases

Spokane corrections center reports 79 COVID-19 inmate cases December 14, 2020 GMT SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Authorities in Washington state have reported that more than half of the inmates at Geiger Corrections Center have tested positive for COVID-19 and are being kept in isolation and quarantined. Spokane County Detention Services said that 79 of the 138 inmates at the facility tested positive as of Friday, The Spokesman-Review reported. The Airway Heights facility, located west of Spokane, has capacity for 360 inmates. Department officials also said that 11 detention center employees tested positive. ADVERTISEMENT The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
