Reactions to Kindness Challenge reflect divide Two letters to the editor were submitted in response to our Kindness Challenge put forth by a diverse group of community leaders. One letter writer shared about LivingRoomDiscussions.com, a great resource and a very tangible way any individual can begin to have neighborly conversations about issues that matter, in hopes of resolving differences and finding common ground. The other letter writer took the opportunity to spew negative rhetoric. He first took the perspective that he, and those from his political point of view, were right and that they had always supported kindness and civility. And in the same letter he took pot shots and generalized all those who have a different perspective than his as being evil.

Reader shares resource for bridging divides After reading the April 18 column regarding the Mesa County Kindness Challenge, I would like to share a resource that promotes civil discourse. Author and mediator Mark Gerzon describes a growing movement that promotes the practice of respectful dialogue. In his book, “The Reunited States of America: How We Can Bridge the Partisan Divide,” he notes Living Room Conversations as a resource for bridging differences. Feb 13, 2021 THANK YOU — Jazmine Jones, a third-grade student at Buckeye West Elementary in Adena, writes a homemade thank-you card as part of her class’s Kindness Challenge project. Starting this month, students conduct a series of generous acts to brighten moods and make family and schoolmates smile. Teacher Kelley Novak hopes to continue activities for the rest of the school year. Contributed ADENA Third-graders at Buckeye West Elementary in Adena are promoting kindness to uplift spirits at school and at home. Teacher Kelley Novak began her Kindness Challenge earlier this month and hopes to continue it for the remainder of the school year, saying simple acts can make a big impact upon others. Students will be tasked each day to perform an activity from putting a friendly note on someone’s locker to thanking a teacher.
