Organizers hope Indy youth summit, jobs program brings hope to teens

Jul 23, 2021 / 10:48 PM EST INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) Dozens of families came out for the second Far Eastside Youth Anti-Gun Violence and Drugs Summit Friday afternoon hosted by the Pathway Resource Center. One of the biggest draws for the summit was the graduation of 25 teens for the Training Youth for Success program, a monthlong job readiness program that teaches teens the basics they need to set a strong foundation for the future. It’s a foundation that teens like Jamyah Gillard say will be remembered well past graduation day. “It was amazing,” Gillard said. “I loved hearing my name get called up a lot.”

Indianapolis City-County councilor hopes to curb violence through series of youth summits

Jul 16, 2021 / 08:28 AM EST INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) An Indianapolis City-County councilor hopes to curb crime through a series of youth summits. La Keisha Jackson is a Democrat who represents District 14 on the far east side. The district is bounded on the west by Post Road, on the east by Carroll Road, on the south by 21st Street and on the north by 46th Street. Jackson said there is a lack of resources for young people in her area, and she’s working to change that, through the Far Eastside Youth Anti-Drugs and Gun Summit. “I don’t think it’s up for them to figure this out; I think it’s up to us as a community, as a whole to help them. They need help,” said Jackson.

“You guys don’t even give a (expletive),” the person said. That was the moment that led to multiple people being told to leave the City-County Council meeting ahead of a vote to adopt Proposal 182. The proposal includes $3.3 million in public safety with roughly half of it going to IMPD. Indy 10 Black Lives Matter representatives said they didn’t go to the meeting to cause interruptions, but sometimes disruption amplifies a message. Jessica Louise, an Indy 10 Black Lives Matter member, was at Monday night’s meeting. She said, “You all too often come into the space and you’re not listening to what people are saying. You’re saying let’s start a community advisory board, let’s make sure this has a civilian majority. But when your constituents are coming to you in that space and confronting you, you’re disregarding it.
