Numerous parents had asked the district what its mask policy would be, saying they need the information before deciding on whether to enroll their children.  On the afternoon of Monday, July 12, 2021, Portage Public Schools announced that masks would be optional. We were getting a lot of questions from our families about what our mask-wearing policies were going to be this coming year, said Portage Superintendent Mark Bielang. And so we wanted to let them know as soon as possible that masks would be optional for all of our students and staff. We certainly recommend that staff members or students who are unvaccinated that they feel more comfortable wearing masks that they wear those.

Kalamazoo City Commissioners approve School Resource Officer position for next school year By Will Kriss Jul 6, 2021 | 11:01 PM KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A School Resource Officer (SRO) position at Loy Norrix High School and Kalamazoo Central High School has been approved for the 2021-2022 school year, as decided by the Kalamazoo Board of Commissioners Tuesday night. The position is made possible through a partnership between the City and Kalamazoo Public Schools, and the officer is hand-selected by Chief Vernon Coakley of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS). The officer at Kalamazoo Central High School would be from the Township of Kalamazoo, while the Loy Norrix officer would be from KDPS. The deal for having this position at Kalamazoo Central has already been approved.

Kalamazoo Public Schools unveil three-year strategy to reverse impact of pandemic learning

By Will Kriss Jun 30, 2021 | 5:02 PM KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) have unveiled a three-year strategy meant to reverse the impacts of the pandemic on student learning. Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri fleshed out the KPS Accelerated Plan for Trustees on Tuesday. The four main goals of the program will be to work on the well-being of students and their families, carefully monitor and assess progress, make sure they are doing it equitably, and leverage community partnerships, because it will take all hands on deck. “The district recognizes that it takes a village to raise our children,” Raichoudhuri said. “The Kalamazoo community continues to work closely with the district to meet the needs of students. These partnerships will continue to grow and expand related to the needs that we see for children as they learn and grow.”
