Portage Public Schools announced that masks would be optional for the 2021-2022 school year.
Numerous parents had asked the district what its mask policy would be, saying they need the information before deciding on whether to enroll their children. On the afternoon of Monday, July 12, 2021, Portage Public Schools announced that masks would be optional. We were getting a lot of questions from our families about what our mask-wearing policies were going to be this coming year, said Portage Superintendent Mark Bielang. And so we wanted to let them know as soon as possible that masks would be optional for all of our students and staff. We certainly recommend that staff members or students who are unvaccinated that they feel more comfortable wearing masks that they wear those.
