KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) Despite former Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield resigning from his new position as CEO of Southwest Michigan First, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners has voted to suspend its relationship with the organization at this time.
During a virtual meeting Tuesday night, the Board discussed the matter at length, which had previously been discussed during the last meeting. The issue stemmed from the announcement that Chatfield had been hired as CEO of Southwest Michigan First last month.
That decision drew backlash from multiple organizations, including the County Board of Commissioners and the City of Kalamazoo Board of Commissioners. Many cited Chatfield’s stances on LGBTQ-related issues, while others cited his lack of experience for the position.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) Tuesday, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners began discussion on how to spend the revenue from the “Homes for All” millage that was passed by voters last November.
As written, the revenue is .75 mills for eight years, which would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $38 per year. That would help raise about $6.3 million dollars in the first year and about $50 million over the eight year life of the millage.

They have been waiting to get the vaccine for months.
Newman said she worries about how COVID-19 could affect her family members who suffer from other medical conditions. They have spent most of the last year inside to try and avoid it, going out only for essentials, she said.
As President Joe Biden prepared to travel by Air Force One to tour the Portage plant Friday, Feb. 19, Newman’s family and thousands of others across Kalamazoo County are stuck in their homes, waiting for the lifesaving vaccine.
