(AP) In the 1970s, word spread through Gallatin Gateway that the bell in the 1914 schoolhouse needed to be removed over concerns the old bell tower could no longer hold it. Whoever managed to remove the bell could keep it, the district said. Ed ter Telgte, a rancher who attended the school as a child, took up the challenge. After he removed the bell, it stayed with him and his family, including on their move to Columbus, Montana. Decades later, the bell was returned to Gallatin Gateway with the help of a sleuthing parent, Morgan Stuart, and the blessing of ter Telgte’s wife, Karen.

Some Cool Things That Happened Locally You May Have Missed While we were busy getting ready and hosting our St. Jude Country Cares Radiothon last week, some really cool happenings took place that we missed. We want to make sure that you know about them, so here s a couple of examples our local community shining again. Masonic Lodge Provides Computers for Schools Gallatin Mason Lodge #6 provided some local schools computers to help facilitate online teaching and learning. Along with Ancient Free & Accepted Masons (A.F.&A.M), the Gallatin Mason Lodge #6 provided some desktop computers to the Bozeman School District and several laptop computers to the Gallatin Gateway School District. These donations will aid in improving access by both teachers and students to online and in-person public education within the local school districts.

Gallatin Gateway: School district to float bond issue for facility renovation

The Gallatin Gateway School District’s board of trustees has finalized the language a $7 million bond issue that will be presented to voters in May. The recently approved ballot states that if passed, the bond will be used for “paying the costs of designing, constructing, remodeling, renovating, equipping, and furnishing improvements to the Gallatin Gateway School facilities.” Community input has been a major part of the Gallatin Gateway School District’s plans to renovate and upgrade its facilities and form a bond issue to raise the necessary funds. In November 2019, the school district began considering a new bond issue, at the time centered around taking care of the properties’ deferred maintenance and deficiencies. However, as the district connected with a design team, created a building committee and began seeking community reaction through multiple public surveys and workshops, the focus shifted to making the facility meet the future needs of the sch
