March 1 letter to leaders of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Health Subcommittee, the Academy outlined its desired legislative pathways to improving telehealth in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Noting that some 70% of family physicians say they plan to continue providing more telehealth services in the future, the AAFP called on lawmakers to increase “equitable access to high-quality telehealth services, such as those provided by primary care physicians within a patient’s medical home.
Blitzing for Family Medicine
The Academy’s fight for family medicine is nothing if not a long game. Sometimes, though, the playbook calls for the old ghost blitz.
That was the maneuver last week when the AAFP’s president, Board chair and Board members conducted a high-powered, minutely scheduled day of lobbying pandemic-style virtually.
How’d it go?
“Great day, great day,” Academy President Ada Stewart, M.D., of Columbia, S.C., said on the video call that participants shared afterward to debrief.
It was a full day, certainly. Stewart’s agenda had included sit-downs with staff from her state’s senators, Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, and Rep. Joe Wilson, also R-S.C.; additionally, she joined AAFP colleagues for meetings with staff for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

FAIRBORN If you mention the name Gary LeRoy, M.D., around the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, nearly everyone knows the person who is a leader and mentor with the school and a physician and volunteer within the community. What they may not know is that LeRoy is also an author.
“Quotes from the Edge of Nowhere: The Art of Noticing Unnoticed Wisdom,” is the title of LeRoy’s first book. It was released in late January by Dorrance Publishing Company, Inc.
The book is about a 20-to-40-year life journey. It recounts randomly selected personal quotes, saved in a cookie jar, to create a life-learning narrative using the origin of each quote.
