Guide to tackling septoria disease in wheat
Guide to tackling septoria disease in wheat >More in © Gary Naylor Septoria tritici is the most damaging foliar disease of UK wheat, causing yield losses that can range from about 30% to as much as 50% in high-pressure seasons. Considered by most agronomists to be by far the biggest threat to UK cereal crops, septoria has come into even sharper focus as it has developed reduced sensitivity to key fungicides, affecting their performance in the field. Septoria overwinters in a dormant state on crop debris, trash, grass hosts and volunteers. Infection usually results from airborne spores moving into crops and landing on the leaves. This is followed by a 14- to 28-day latent period, when the fungus grows within the leaf but no symptoms are exhibited.

5 tips on using Nemathorin to control nematodes in spuds
5 tips on using Nemathorin to control nematodes in spuds >More in © Gary Naylor Photography Growers using Nemathorin for the first time this spring to control nematodes in potato crops are being urged to carefully follow the guidelines on its safe use. The loss of Vydate (oxamyl) means potato growers have just two options for managing nematodes: Velum Prime which, according to the label, is effective against potato cyst nematodes (PCN), and Nemathorin (fosthiazate), which lists both PCN and free living nematodes on the label. This will mean some growers will be using Nemathorin to tackle nematode infestations for the first time.

This is the tool whereby the European Commission decides whether a non-EU country’s regulatory, supervisory and enforcement regime is equivalent to its own. Failure to secure the equivalence status put an end to all GB seed potato exports to Northern Ireland and Europe from January 1 this year.

Potato growers lose Vydate in nematode battle
Potato growers lose Vydate in nematode battle >More in © Gary Naylor Potato growers have lost another vital tool for controlling potato cyst nematodes, following the UK government’s decision not to reauthorise the use of the pesticide Vydate (oxamyl). Manufactured by Corteva Agriscience, the nematicide was a valuable product for controlling potato cyst nematode (PCN), especially in shorter-season crops. It means Vydate can no longer be sold, distributed or used in the UK. The storage and disposal of the product has been approved until 28 February 2021. The loss of Vydate leaves growers with two products for managing PCN, Nemathorin (fosthiazate) and Velum Prime (fluopyram). A key feature of Vydate was its 80-day harvest interval, compared with 119 days for Nemathorin, which will make control of the pest more challenging in short-season crops such as new potatoes.
