Garlic-based nematicide shows promise for Yorks root grower

Garlic-based nematicide shows promise for Yorks root grower >More in © Gary Naylor Photography The control of free-living and root-knot nematodes is a problem for many vegetable growers, particularly as the mainstay nematicide Vydate (oxamyl) was withdrawn from use last December. Despite its loss, a fully registered, granular nematicide formulated from garlic is proving effective in reducing nematode populations on one Yorkshire farm. Left untreated, the soil-borne microscopic pest feeds directly on crop roots, which distorts and disfigures the root known as “fanging”. This can lead to marketable yield losses of 30-40%, as crops fail to meet tight supermarket quality specifications.

Analysis: How Brexit affects farmers access to pesticides

© Tim Scrivener Adequate resources and a more pragmatic, science-based approach by UK regulators will be crucial to growers gaining better access to crop-protection tools after Brexit. Over recent years, plenty of criticism has been directed at the EU’s chemicals and pesticide regulatory system, which is arguably the most complicated in the world. It sees timelines for approval of new or existing active substances or products littered with delays, creating a very uncertain and costly environment for approval holders. In addition to sluggish decision-making, the EU’s move to a hazard-based system and continual politicising of issues, such as the future of glyphosate, have also drawn accusations that the system isn’t following science.

Should a multisite fungicide be used in wheat this season?

Should a multisite fungicide be used in wheat this season? >More in © Gary Naylor Photography With no concrete case for routine inclusion of other multisites following the loss of chlorothalonil, the level of septoria risk should be the only deciding factor for their inclusion this spring. The last couple of years has seen plenty of discussion about the impact of chlorothalonil’s withdrawal on disease control programmes and what, if anything, should be used in its place. Just two conventional multisite fungicides remain, namely folpet and mancozeb, and all manufacturers can show data that shines a positive light on their respective products.

We were waiting for the opportunity to come, said 68-year-old Gary Naylor from Eagle Mountain. This is the first chance we ve had to get it. Naylor and his wife were among many in line at the Utah County Health Department Monday, filling their appointment to get their first dose after Gov. Spencer Cox announced last week that those age 65 and older would immediately be eligible to get the vaccine.
