Shy-no-more, sold for $36,000. The artwork was inspired by her love of sparkly dancing clothes and a particular pair of sequinned hot pants she bought in a Sydney boutique. She said it took about 390 hours to decorate the penguin. Her research of yellow-eyed penguins revealed they were very shy. “This guy is not shy any more,’ she said. “He wants to go out and dance. Photo / Supplied Otago Daily Times The Waitaki District Council has sent a clear message to the carbon forestry industry after hearing farmers concerns about large forestry conversions. At a council meeting on Tuesday, North Otago farmers Murray Simpson, Jane Smith and Paul Ruddenklau told councillors they feared the environmental impacts carbon forestry developments could have on their properties. Councillors then unanimously agreed to ask council staff to begin drafting proposals to address production and carbon forestry effects in the district. Council chief executive Fergus Power said it set a clear policy direction, and sent a signal to the industry.

The Climate Change Commission has released a major report setting out the changes that will need to be made for New Zealand to meet international emissions obligations. Commissioner Dr Rod Carr described it as “ambitious but achievable.”  There will now be a period of consultation, and at a certain point the government will be legally required to respond to the plan, either accepting it and implementing it as policy, or setting out one of its own.
