She said it took about 390 hours to decorate the penguin. Her research of yellow-eyed penguins revealed they were very shy. “This guy is not shy any more,’ she said. “He wants to go out and dance. He wants to have a good time.”

The auction of 50-odd giant penguin sculptures netted more than $1 million and 75 per cent of the proceeds will go to the Cholmondeley Children's Centre.

Adams said she was “overwhelmed” by the price her sculpture reached. “That was absolutely incredible, she said after the hammer closed the sale at $21,000. “I had a feeling it would do well, but not that well. I started crying and so did my mum. “Penguins and tui are both quite mischievous, and I wanted to bring that out. At this scale I could really show the colours and the feathers of the tui.”
